What to Expect at Your First Personal Training Session at Zone Fitness

Feb 2, 2026

Starting personal training can feel intimidating, especially if you have never worked with a trainer, have not exercised in a long time or are worried that you are “too out of shape” to begin.

At Zone Fitness, your first session is not a test you have to pass. It is an opportunity for us to learn about you, understand what you want to accomplish and begin building a program that fits your current ability.

You do not need to get in shape before you arrive. Helping you get started is the entire point.

Your first appointment will be private and one-on-one

Zone Fitness is a private personal-training studio in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, not a crowded gym where you are expected to figure everything out on your own.

Your initial session will be with me, Ashling Perham, the owner of Zone Fitness. I conduct our first sessions so I can personally learn about each new client, understand their needs and determine how our team can best support them.

You will not be dropped into a class or asked to keep up with anyone else. The appointment is focused on you.

We begin with a conversation

Before choosing exercises, I want to understand why you are here.

We will discuss topics such as:

  • your goals and what progress would mean to you;
  • your current activity level and exercise experience;
  • previous injuries, surgeries, pain or physical limitations;
  • activities you enjoy or strongly dislike;
  • your schedule and how often you realistically want to train;
  • concerns that may have kept you from exercising consistently in the past.

Some clients want to feel stronger and more confident. Others want support with weight management, better mobility, improved sports performance or a safe transition back to exercise. Many have several goals at once.

There is no “correct” answer. This conversation helps me understand what matters to you and what kind of plan you are likely to continue.

Do I need to be weighed?

We may discuss useful ways to establish a starting point and track progress, but personal training is not limited to a number on the scale.

Progress can include improved strength, better balance, increased mobility, greater exercise confidence, more energy, better consistency or being able to perform an everyday activity more comfortably.

If weight loss is one of your goals, we can acknowledge it without allowing the scale to become the only measure of success. The purpose of your first session is to understand the whole person, not reduce you to a number.

Will I work out during the first session?

Yes. After our conversation, we will get started with an introductory workout appropriate for you.

This is not designed to exhaust you or see how much discomfort you can tolerate. It allows me to observe how you move, how different exercises feel and what level of instruction and resistance is appropriate.

Depending on your goals and history, we may explore foundational movements such as sitting and standing, pushing, pulling, stepping, hinging, carrying or basic core control. We can use dumbbells, cables, resistance bands, TRX equipment, machines or body-weight movements.

Not everyone will perform the same exercises. Someone returning after physical therapy may need a different starting point from an experienced runner, golfer or recreational athlete. A client with knee replacements, shoulder limitations or a history of back pain should not be handed a generic workout designed for someone else.

What if I cannot do an exercise?

That is useful information, not failure.

Exercises can often be adjusted by changing the range of motion, resistance, position, equipment or movement itself. If something causes pain or does not feel appropriate, tell me. You will never impress a good trainer by hiding pain and pushing through it.

Our goal is to find an effective starting point. That may look different from what you have seen online, and that is perfectly fine.

If symptoms or limitations require medical evaluation, I may ask you to speak with your physician or physical therapist before we proceed with certain activities. Personal training can work alongside medical care, but it does not replace it.

Will the first workout make me extremely sore?

It should not.

Some mild muscle soreness can occur when you begin a new activity, but extreme soreness is not proof that a workout was effective. During an introductory session, I would rather learn how your body responds and leave room to progress than give you so much work that normal activities become miserable for several days.

Challenge should increase gradually. Consistency is much more valuable than surviving one punishing workout.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move and supportive athletic shoes. You may also want to bring water.

You do not need special workout clothes, matching gym sets or expensive equipment. Come in whatever allows you to feel comfortable and move safely.

If your physician or physical therapist has provided exercise restrictions or relevant instructions, bring those with you or send them before the session. Please also tell me about any changes in your health, pain or medications that could affect exercise.

What happens during the three-session introductory package?

Zone Fitness offers a three-session introductory personal-training package for $185. The purpose is to give us more than one appointment to learn about you and give you a genuine experience of personal training.

The first session establishes your goals, history and starting point. During the next two sessions, we continue training, refine exercise choices and begin seeing what type of instruction, pace and program structure work well for you.

Three sessions also give you time to decide whether the environment and coaching approach feel right. You should not have to make that decision based only on a quick tour or sales conversation.

What happens after the introductory sessions?

After the three sessions, we can discuss your experience, goals, schedule and the training options that make sense for you.

Some clients benefit from training several times each week. Others begin with fewer sessions or combine personal training with independent activity. The appropriate recommendation depends on the person, not on forcing everyone into the same plan.

You will have an opportunity to ask questions about scheduling, packages and what ongoing training would look like. The goal is to help you make an informed choice, not pressure you into a program that does not fit.

Common concerns before a first session

“Everyone there will be fitter than I am.”

Your session is private. You are not competing with other clients, and you will not be expected to perform at someone else’s level.

“I have no idea how to use gym equipment.”

That is completely normal. Teaching you how to use equipment safely is part of the trainer’s job.

“I have been inconsistent for years.”

You are not the only one. Work, family responsibilities, health issues, injuries and life changes interrupt routines. We begin with where you are now.

“I am worried I will be judged.”

You are coming in to ask for guidance, and that deserves respect. Our role is to support you and create a practical plan, not criticize the path that brought you here.

“What if I am nervous?”

You can say so. Many new clients are nervous walking through the door and feel much better once they see that the first appointment is a conversation and an appropriately paced workout, not a fitness audition.

What I want every new client to know

After more than a decade of working with clients, I know that the hardest part is often scheduling the first appointment and showing up.

People sometimes apologize for how long it has been since they exercised or list everything they believe they should have done differently. None of that changes my job. My job is to understand your starting point and help you move forward from it.

You do not have to prove that you belong at Zone Fitness. You do not need to know the exercises, arrive with perfect confidence or promise a dramatic transformation. You only need to be willing to begin.
